One final tease before Nurse’s Orders releases (tomorrow!). I’ve got an excerpt for you. This comes midway into chapter one. To set the scene a bit, Daniel has been hospitalized for smoke inhalation and his nurse is none other than Angelo. After some nightmares wake him, Daniel finds himself wandering the floor, where he comes across Angelo in the break room, watching a movie.
“Hey, sleepyhead, you wanna come snuggle with me?” Angelo smirked at Dan but opened his arms, his face illuminated by the flicker of the television. “I could use a good nap.”
Daniel shook his head, as much to keep himself alert as to respond. Despite his appearance of disdain, he seriously considered the offer. His stomach fluttered at the thought—were those butterflies? What the hell was wrong with him? He almost snorted. “You don’t sleep.”
Angelo sighed, and it almost sounded disappointed. “I do when I want to. If you’re not going to come cuddle, how about you head back to bed? Nurse’s orders.”
“I’m good here, thanks.”
“Come on, Dan,” Angelo said, voice barely above a whisper. “You need the rest. That’s why you’re here, isn’t it?”
Daniel turned on him, glaring and suddenly on high alert. “No, Angelo, that’s not why I’m here. I’m here because you forced me. You forced me to stay here and spend God knows how long doing whatever you tell me I have to do, in the name of medicine. It’s just another one of your stupid games.” He jumped up, annoyed that he had bothered to come in the break room. He should have known better than to try and be friendly with the nurse who always seemed to be pulling practical jokes. No matter what he really wanted, things between the two of them would never be anything other than tense and adversarial, even at the best of times. “Guess I’ll be going back to bed after all. Thanks for your hospitality.” Daniel gritted his teeth and started to leave the room.
The trip was abruptly interrupted as Angelo stood up and relocated directly in front of Dan. “Listen, don’t be a complete dick. I brought you here because Jake agreed with me that you needed a rest. You need to recover from nearly dying in a building fire set by a man attempting suicide by cop. It almost turned you into a human bonfire. You and Mike practically get yourselves killed once a week. There’s no joke here. You just needed a break.”
“Get out of my way.” Daniel towered over Angelo, despite knowing that the nurse could have him restrained and sedated without much difficulty. It didn’t matter to him, he just wanted to escape.
“Ow, that hurts, Dan. I’m here to help.”
“Damn it, Angelo, move,” he said, reaching out and shoving the man.
Surprising both of them, Angelo let him, tumbling back against the wall with a huff. “Goodness, Danno, I had no idea you felt so strongly about me.”
Daniel’s chest was heaving, breathing heavily from rage and…just rage, he was pretty sure. Probably. “Fuck you, Angelo.”
Angelo batted his eyelashes. “Well, if you insist.” He reached up and tugged on the back of Daniel’s neck, drawing him in for a kiss.
